Operational Awareness: Identifying and Responding to CBRNE Threats

See the threat. Understand the mission effect. Support the decision.

CBRNE awareness for defense and intelligence professionals is not about turning every planner, analyst, watch officer, or program manager into a technical specialist. It enables them to recognize when chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive conditions materially change the operational problem and to ask the right questions early enough for specialists and leaders to act. The 2023 Department of Defense Strategy for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction emphasizes preventing, withstanding, operating through, and recovering from WMD challenges; Army CBRN doctrine similarly centers hazard awareness and understanding as the basis for assessment, protection, and mitigation.

This course therefore uses an operational lens: hazard or actor → exposure/access → effect → mission consequence → decision. Learners practice separating observations from assumptions, fusing technical and nontechnical indicators, communicating uncertainty, escalating to specialized support, and integrating CBRNE considerations into plans, exercises, requirements, testing, sustainment, and acquisition decisions.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Operational Awareness: Identifying and Responding to CBRNE Threats is a 10-hour micro-credential designed for defense, military, intelligence, acquisition, and contractor personnel who intersect with CBRNE risks but are not necessarily technical specialists. Through five two-hour modules, learners build a functional understanding of the contemporary CBRNE threat landscape, observable indicators, risk-informed decision support, force and mission protection, specialized reachback, planning, exercise design, capability requirements, test and evaluation, and role-specific application. The instructional design uses short videos, guided readings, visual decision aids, analytic drills, and branching scenarios to convert technical CBRNE information into operational judgment.
